Leakage in vacuum is a common problem in swimming pools. However, there are some measures that can be taken to fix this problem.

The vacuum is an important part of swimming pools, as it facilitates suction of the pump, collects impurities in pool water and sends them to the filtration system. Leaks in the vacuum hampers suction which result in impurities remaining at the bottom of the pool. Therefore, it becomes necessary to find leaks and repair them. Following are some steps that can help in doing that.

Leaks in swimming pool equipment

Check for Leaks:

You can detect leaks in the vacuum of your swimming pool with these steps:

  • Firstly, check the vacuum hose to make sure that all fittings are tight. The head connection that links the vacuum hose to the strainer basket needs to be checked for leaks. Air leaks above the water level are hard to find. However, if there is any bubbling from the underwater connections or from the hose, it implies that there are leaks.
  • When the vacuum conditions are normal, the interior filter basket adjacent to the pump stays full of water. However, if the the basket is partially full, or if there is bubbling, it is a sign of a leak.

Detect the Points of Leakage:

You may need to get into the pool to detect the leaks. Here is what you can do:

  • Start by filling the hose with water. Once the hose is full, slowly lift it up while keeping the head of the vacuum under water. When the leakage point goes above water level, the pump will suck air into the hose, thus forming bubbles. The leakage is at the point where you see the bubbles.
  • You can attach a nozzle to the end of the hose. Then fill the hose with water and lift it up. The point from where water sprays out is the leakage point.

Seal the Leaks:

You can use the following measures to seal the leaks in the vacuum of your swimming pool.

  • For a temporary solution, you can cover the holes on the vacuum hose using a duct tape. This serves as a quick fix.
  • On dry or wet hoses, you can use a waterproof hose repair spray. Spray it on the hose to fill the leaks. This is a better alternative than duct tape.
  • The leakage can be stopped by inserting a connector in the hose. At the leakage point, cut the hose into two halves using a knife. Then insert the connector between the two halves.

Recommended Product:

Just like vacuum, the filter cartridges of a swimming pool too need to be monitored. Old and damaged filter cartridges should be replaced with new ones. Unicel C-7470 is a suitable replacement cartridge. Having 3-inch holes at the top and bottom, this cartridge is 7 inches wide and 20 inches long. Made from high-quality material, this cartridge effectively traps dust and other impurities in pool water. Other specifications include Pleatco# PCC80, Filbur# FC-1976 and OEM# 178580.
